Polymarket markets resolve through UMA's optimistic oracle. After the event, anyone can propose the result by posting a bond (typically $750). If nobody disputes it within two hours, the market resolves. A first dispute starts a new proposal round; a second dispute sends the question to a UMA token-holder vote that takes about 48 hours. Undisputed markets settle about two hours after the proposal; disputed ones take roughly four to six days.
| Step | What happens | How long |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Proposal | Anyone selects the outcome and posts a bond (typically $750). | After the event ends |
| 2. Challenge window | Anyone can dispute by posting a matching bond. | 2 hours |
| 3a. No dispute | The proposal stands and the market resolves; winning shares redeem for $1. | ~2 hours after the proposal |
| 3b. First dispute | A new proposal round begins. | Another 2-hour window |
| 4. Second dispute | The question goes to UMA's Data Verification Mechanism: UMA token holders vote. | About 48 hours |
Summary of Polymarket's resolution documentation. Disputed markets take about 4–6 days in total.
When a question turns out to be ambiguous, Polymarket can add “additional context”. It is published on-chain through a bulletin-board contract, cannot change the fundamental intent of the question, and UMA voters are expected to take it into account in a dispute.
Through UMA's optimistic oracle: anyone proposes the result with a bond, and if nobody disputes it within two hours the market resolves. Disputes lead to a new proposal round and, if disputed again, a UMA token-holder vote.
About two hours after an undisputed proposal. Disputed markets take roughly four to six days because of the extra proposal round and the roughly 48-hour UMA vote.
Polymarket can publish additional context to clarify an ambiguous question, but its documentation says a clarification cannot change the question's fundamental intent.
